YieldTalk #34: Informed Investment Crowdfunding

Hello Reader,

This week: Invest in a pair of Air Jordans *actually worn by Jordan*; Ray Dalio on Bitcoin; How millennials are shaking up luxury real estate

Notable Offerings

🏍️ The oddly named "WAT Motorcycle Financing Sr. 2021-2" is a 27-month, 11.00% APY secured credit facility offered by Cadence. Payments are structured as monthly interest-only for the first 7 months, with quarterly amortization after that. The minimum investment is $15,000, and the offering is open only to accredited investors.

...

Invest in a pair of game-worn Air Jordans. From the offering:

In August of 1985, Michael Jordan iconically shattered the backboard during a Nike-sponsored exhibition game in Trieste, Italy. These shoes are the exact pair he wore during that legendary moment β€” in fact, the left shoe still has a piece of glass embedded in its sole. Authenticated both through photo matching and traceable prior ownership history, these game-worn MJ sneakers are truly 1 of 1.

The minimum investment is $10, open to all investors. More from Otis (read our review).

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're probably aware that Bitcoin (and a number of other cryptocurrencies) are on quite a tear so far this year. One of the challenges with investing in crypto is managing the tax reporting. A startup called Node40 is raising on NextSeed, positioning themselves as the "Quickbooks of crypto" to help traders and investors track their transactions and generate relevant tax docs. Minimum investment is $100, open to all investors. (Read our review of NextSeed, which was acquired by Republic last year.)

Worth Reading this Week

It seems just about everyone has an opinion on Bitcoin (here's mine!), and billionaire hedge fund manager (and "Principles" author) Ray Dalio's perspective is well worth a read.

(Speaking of Bitcoin opinions, color me impressed by this take from October 2018 predicting "Bitcoin is on track for $50,000 by 2021")

(Also speaking of Bitcoin, if you're HODLing, and want to earn some additional yield on your investment, check out BlockFi.)

...

A big reason to get into alternative investments is for building long-term wealth. If you want to see where you stand relative to others in your age group, check out Visual Capitalist's look at net worth by age in America.

...

Another great reason to look at investment crowdfunding platforms for your portfolio is the chance to invest in startups that are overlooked by traditional VC firms (who overwhelmingly invest in founders that look like themselves and went to the same schools they did). The recent IPO of Bumble has made its 31-year-old female founder a billionaire, and reinforces research showing that women-led startups produce better returns than those founded by men.

...

Speaking of 31-year-olds (at least the non-billionaire kind), it seems that Millennials are reshaping the luxury real estate market, with implications for a range of real estate investment categories.
